Young Dancemakers Company is a unique, free summer dance ensemble of NYC teens dedicated to creating their own original choreography and performing it in free touring concerts city-wide, for audiences of up to 2000 young people and adults each season. Company members, selected annually by audition, are drawn from throughout the NYC public high schools.
Directed by Alice Teirstein, 17 young dancers of the Young Dancemakers Company will present a concert of new, lively, and original choreography on Sunday, July 29.
The company will present a concert of their own choreography, based on meaningful personal and social themes, and perform an excerpt by renowned choreographer Jane Comfort. The concert, with both live percussion and taped music, will be immediately followed by a free audience interactive workshop in on-the-spot dance-making, led by the company.

The Young Dancemakers Company, now entering its 23rd season, draws students are drawn from New York City’s public high schools city-wide and selected by audition. Throughout July, urban youth will create a concert of their own choreography in daily intensive training and rehearsal sessions.
This year, the Young Dancemakers Company is launching a Choreographer/Composer Project, which will pair nine professional composers with nine emerging choreographers to create original scores for each piece. You can learn more about them in this BronxNet segment.

Young Dancemakers Company, tuition-free, offering motivated urban youth an opportunity not otherwise available to them, is made possible through generous foundation funding, individual contributions and the Fieldston School. The company is selected by city-wide auditions, to which they are referred by their high school teachers.
