Mother’s Day is fast approaching – it’s on Sunday, May 8! – and there’s nothing more special than a handcrafted gift form the heart. Fortunately, Flushing Town Hall is holding two special workshops in which the young and young-at-heart can create gifts for mom!
On Saturday, April 30, Flushing Town Hall will host a 10:30 AM workshop in which attendees can imagine, design and create a clay teacup or bowl using the pinch pot method, and then paint it! This workshop is designed for children 12 years old and younger. This workshop is led by Suzanne DeMarco, Flushing Town Hall teaching artist and educator with over twenty years experience. She is the developer of a unique art teaching system, www.justdoart4kids.com especially geared to art novices and young students of art.
Then, at 1:00 PM, attendees can create Korean Minhwa Folk paintings, which are given as gifts on special occasions. The traditional peony decoration means a happy life and marriage. This workshop is best for children 12 years old and up. Minhwa paintings were done and shared by ordinary people with vibrant colors and energetic subject matters.
These paintings were considered “true view” and decorated almost every household in Korea. Workshop leader Stephanie Lee is a master of Minhwa having studied the form in South Korea before earning her BFA from the Pratt Institute. In addition to being a Flushing Town Hall Teaching Artist, she is an artist and curator who has been awarded on numerous occasions for her exceptional work.
Tickets are required for both workshops and available at: www.flushingtownhall.org
