Flushing Town Hall Launches New Year, New Season with Kick-Off Party

ssingssing-mainOn Friday, January 6, Flushing Town Hall will launch the new year and new season of programming with a special party and concert by SsingSsing, a sextet of musicians that combines disparate elements or rock and Korean folk singing for an exciting, unique experience.

SsingSsing, comprised of six Korean musicians from diverse genres, welds two totally disparate elements: rock band music and authentic Korean folk singing – Minyo – while including elements from ballads, pop music and shamanist rituals with an extravagant visual style and stage manners. The group creates a unique vibe while introducing elements of Korean traditional music, such as Gyeonggi Minyo (folk song of Gyeonggi area), Seodo Minyo (folk song of Hwanghae/Pyeongan area) and Seoul Gut (shamanistic ritual) in its works.

SsingSsing features Hee-moon Lee (lead vocal), Young-gyu Jang (Music Director/bass guitar), Da-hye Choo (vocal), Seung-tae Shin (vocal), Chul-hee Lee (drum), and Tae-won Lee (electric guitar/keyboard).

Starting off the evening is a season kick-off party and VIP reception for Members and special guests at 7:00 PM, followed by the concert at 8:00 PM. Tickets – $16 for non-members; $10 for members and students; free for teenagers between 13 and 19 years old – are available at www.flushingtownhall.org.

SSingSsing launches the 2017 season, which is packed with family and special events, performances, robust Lunar New Year programming, and new exhibitions that celebrate global arts for a global community and global arts for global kids.

Among the season’s musical highlights: Guy Davis (American Blues Ambassador) on Feb. 4; Grace Kelly Quartet on Feb. 24; Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars (Inspired Western African Music) on March 4; Jeffery Broussard & the Creole Cowboys on March 10; Piano Masters: Toshiko Akiyoshi & Barry Harris on March 31; Herencia de Timbiqui (Afro-Colombian Music from the Pacific Coast) on April 29; Queens Jazz Orchestra: A Musical Tribute to Sonny Rollins on June 9; and, Musitonik Ensemble on June 14.

The season also will see the return of the popular Global Mashup series, each of which features two musical performances from different regions, then combines both for a unique experience. On tap are: Spain Meets Garifuna on March 24; Japan Meets Puerto Rico on April 7; Mali Meets Morocco on April 21; Taiwan Meets Jamaica on May 5; and Thailand Meets Tahiti on May 19.
